“GOD IS MY REFUGE & STRENGTH, A VERY PRESENT HELP” PSALM 46 VERSES 1
Natural disasters, terrorist attack, injustice, incurable disease and death, all these experiences point to suffering, both global and personal. Suffering expresses itself personally: loss of relationship, loss of health, breakup of marriage, death of a loved one. Suffering touches us in ways we are usually unprepared for. Suffering affects us physically, emotionally, irrationally, financially and spiritually. In suffering we come up against a nameless, faceless and heartless enemy. And that enemy evokes questions for which we have no answers and from which we have very little defence and protection. There is not a single person who has not endured some form of pain and suffering. Some people go through more pain than others, but we all go through some degree of pain.
Suffering feels mysterious and overwhelming: We wonder why we are suffering. Why me, is the normal question?Suffering is experienced alone: people sympathise, but they cannot feel what you are going through.
Our suffering either drives us away from GOD or draws us to GOD. In the Bible in Psalms 46verse1, the psalmist proclaims that GOD is my refuge and strength, a very present help. God is omnipotent (all knowing) and omnipresent (with us always). It is with HIS strength that we come out of our suffering much wiser and much stronger. The most beautiful people are those who have known global and personal immeasurable suffering and have found their way out of the depth of misery. These people have appreciation, gratitude and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness and deep loving concern for others.
Prayer
Thank you GOD for being my refuge and help at all times.
